METHODS OF BIRTH CONTROL: COITUS INTERRUPTUS
This consists of the man withdrawing the penis from the woman’s vagina just before the semen is ejaculated.
I never recommend it because: (1) Even if it is successfully practised, it is not an adequate safeguard against conception, since sperm may leak out before the actual ejaculation takes place. (2) It is usually a cause of tension and strain, placing a heavy responsibility upon the man, who finds it difficult to control his actions while he is highly excited. As a result, he may become irritable or emotionally disturbed, feeling guilty if he fails. The woman’s concern lest he should fail to withdraw at the proper moment is a source of fear, tension, and emotional difficulties to her as well. (3) At best, coitus interruptus does not permit the development of the full tenderness and love during the sexual act that come when intercourse is completed while the sexual organs are united.
Every family must decide for itself which, if any, to use. Young couples who have decided to limit and space their families should discuss the subject with their doctor or with qualified persons at a birth control clinic or family planning agency. Or you may write to the Family Planning Association, 92 City Road, Chippendale, N.S.W. or 80a Pitt Street, Auckland, N.Z.
