SEX: THE ACT

Most of us grow up thinking that sex means the big one, you know, a penis inside a vagina, going in and out. Everything else is foreplay, or stuff you do before ‘having sex’. This kind of sex is ‘heterosexual genital penetrative inter-course’. These are just some of the other commonly known and practiced sexual variations.

Anal sex. Sexual stimulation, and usually penetration, of a person’s anus, usually with a penis. The anus may belong to a female or male. It requires a certain amount of relaxation of the anal muscles, and usually extra lubrication in order to be comfortable, but is widely practiced by homosexual males and a significant proportion of heterosexual couples. It is apparently more commonly practiced in some cultures where maintaining an intact hymen (evidence of physical ‘virginity’) is important before marriage, and for contraceptive purposes, where contraceptives are less freely available.

Kissing, cuddling, touching, and feeling. Don’t forget these in the rush to ‘bigger things’. Although they are usually part of sexual stimulation prior to some form of intercourse, they are valid forms of sexual expression in their own right, and can be incredibly satisfying, not just as a means to an end, so to speak. This is also called ‘petting’. Genital touching is known as ‘heavy petting’.
