SICKNESS IN INFANTS AND CHILDREN: DIPHTHERIA
Every child should be immunized early and completely against diphtheria.
Diphtheria is caused by a bacillus type of germ that usually grows on the tonsils and throat and can infect the nose and larynx. The throat is sore and swollen and there may be a greyish membrane covering the tissue. This membrane may get so large that it plus the swelling can obstruct the breathing. That is one reason why diphtheria needs immediate medical attention, usually in a specialized contagious-disease unit of a hospital. Another reason for the high fatality rate of the disease is the powerful soluble poison given off by the growing diphtheria germs. This toxic material is absorbed into the body, and affects the heart and other vital organs. It may paralyse important nerves that control swallowing or breathing.
Diphtheria usually gives plenty of warning that something serious is happening to the child. There will be fever, prostration, and vomiting, as well as sore throat. Bloody mucus may appear in one or both nostrils.
